JAY MOYES: Thank the heavens and a number of rogue deities it doesn’t affect my artwork. LA Porn, for it’s paranoia has its act together a lot better than people think. It’s the webmasters across the US that are the most vulnerable. What we have to remember is that the locals love a good excuse to bust an adult business, no matter how small. 2257 is just more ammo for them to use in the near future. If you listen carefully, you’ll start to hear about 2257 busts in small, Midwest towns for running an adult site, swingers board, or a dungeon.
My artwork is more impacted by what’s coming down the line. Once the feds are satisfied with their accomplishments, they’ll start taking down the artists for kicks. We’ll get obscenity charges or something else they pin on us.
ALT.com: When you are creating your heroines, do you think in terms of character, or do you think more about the lines, the visual presentation?
JAY MOYES: They definitely have characters of their own. They rarely tell me their names though. I think more about what they’re doing. Some have little stories behind them.
ALT.com: What is the nature of submission as you see it–will we recognize that in your art?
JAY MOYES: Enchantment plays a certain part. The Dommes I draw are loving seductresses. The submissives I draw tell a bit more. I like bondage, and anal toys. You’ll see the subbies bound in latex with piercings, butt plugs, gags, clothespins and other devices. Those are things I tend to think and fantasize about.
ALT.com: Tell us about your show coming up.
JAY MOYES: Saturday, August 27 at 6 P.M., we’re putting together a show of my artwork for Threshold. We’re going to hold it at Hollywoodland Studios in North Hollywood. It’s a space we’ve put a lot of work into in the past. I’ve got two murals in the men’s room. We’ve got about five rooms to play with and a stage area where we do classes and events. The plan is to do the show and have the artwork up for future classes and events. I’ve got over 20 pieces framed and ready to go up, plus other pieces I have special plans for. We’re talking to sponsors and I already have DVDs to hand out at the event. I’ll have information on www.JayMoyes.com in the near future.
ALT.com: How do you decide what to put into the show, what you needed for the show, etc.
JAY MOYES: I look through the pieces that mean the most to me and frame them. Some have haven’t been photocopied or scanned. I like to think of these as my best work. The Ring Mistress used to hang right over my bed, and currently sits over my entertainment center.

ALT.com: What kinds of comments do you get from people at shows?
JAY MOYES: What’s strange is many refuse to believe they’re originals. The images are so detailed, they assume the artwork must be a print. The most frustrating thing is most people who see them are afraid to display them in their homes. Fetish art is still taboo for kinky people with families.
ALT.com: What's your sense of who your audience is?
JAY MOYES: I try not to worry about that too much. The artwork gets a lot of compliments. People are intrigued. If I fit the artwork just around what an audience wanted, I wouldn’t be much of an artist. I get requests for more male dominant artwork, or drawings of submissive women. I know plenty of artists who do that and many others who would draw that style just for the money. This comes more from the heart and soul.
ALT.com: What comments do you hear most often from the fans who love your work?
JAY MOYES: They ask a lot of questions. How long did it take? What pen do I use? Sometimes they try to figure a mystery in a piece. They love the sense of detail. I’ll hear after a couple of minutes something like “ohmygod, I didn’t realize that was in there”.
ALT.com: You write for AVN, do you ever think about putting your writing and your art work together, say graphic novel?
JAY MOYES: Most of what I write for AVN is editorial. Short story and art don’t merge well in my mind for some strange reason. There’s also a serious issue with time. I’ve turned down writing gigs at AVN because my main job is to collect pictures of naked people and create editorial artwork. Kinky cartooning is another subject, and I’ve considered doing that again. The irony is for all my illustration experience, the management at AVN and AVN Online hate illustration. They feel it’s not as professional as stock art or collage.
ALT.com: What hot Femdom things have you yet to draw but would like to?
JAY MOYES: I would like to eventually do a comic or animation where I can make things flow and move. I may just come up with a story without dialogue. I’m very curious about flash animation. I’d like to hang out more in a Dungeon again and draw more of what actually happens in that setting. Fantasy Makers in the San Francisco Bay Area used to be home to me. I miss that experience a lot. There’s no place just like it.
ALT.com: You're in a long-term D/s relationship with Lady Bastette. What in your experience is the most important ingredient for the couple to cultivate (other than communication of course) when trying to maintain a long-term relationship?
JAY MOYES: We actually try to keep the word "relationship" out of our vocabulary for starters. The most important for me is to remember that I serve Lady Bastette. We have a lot of business interfere, and we cover a lot for each other. At the end of the day, I remember it’s all about her, and I’m in love all over again.
